Choose an Engagement Ring that is Right for You

Choosing an engagement ring is a personal decision that should come naturally. Each engagement ring is unique. You may decide to choose a round diamond, a pear cut, or possibly an emerald cut diamond as the center for your setting. Each ring will have a character and feel to it that should suit you, your fiance, and reflect your relationship.

History of Engagement Rings

The engagement ring came about during Roman times when the two people who were going to be married, would have a big celebration and exchange rings as symbols of their commitment. They were traditionally worn on the third finger of the left hand, like they are in many countries today. These rings were mostly plain gold bands, and it was only later that different designs, a separate ring for engagement as opposed to marriage, and different materials to make the ring out of were introduced.

In the 1920s, more unique variations on engagement rings came about and there were colored stones and geometric designs that were very popular. In the 1940s platinum was needed for the war efforts, and people who had platinum jewelry hoarded it. That led to more engagement rings being made from gold instead of other metals, and the gold and diamond engagement ring that is so common today came from those humble beginnings.

While still popular, there are changes taking place and more people are moving back to using other metals and stones instead of gold and diamonds for their engagement jewelry.
